Bishop James E. Tharp, 80, of Corryton, TN, transferred from this life to the Home for which he had lived his life on the evening of Wednesday, June 24, 2015. He was doing what he loved most, grooming the “Little Eden” that he and his wife loved. Overcome by the heat of the day, God used this method to transport him from this life to the next. He was a Bishop that was a Pastor, Counselor, and teacher of many. His best love was teaching Bible Studies; there were literally thousands that were changed to a better way of life due to his leadership, teaching, and guidance. He pastored for approximately 50 years, 30 of which he pastored the Christian Life Center in Kingsport, TN. He served the East Tennessee District as Presbyter of Section I for 24 years.
Bishop Tharp was preceded in death by parents, Escar and Lockye Tharp; brother, Jewel Tharp; sisters, Betty Ellezy and Loyce Barber. He is survived by loving wife of 60 years, Sharon D. Tharp; sons, Philip L. (Jewel) Tharp, Chris L. Tharp, and Jaymes Alan (Rose) Tharp, all of the Knoxville area; 7 grandchildren, Leah, Lindsey, Luke, Ashley, Jami, Katlyn, and Logan; 3 great grandchildren, Ayden, Sienna, and Scarlett; brothers Bill Tharp and wife Doris of Hohenwald, TN, Rev. Telford Tharp and wife Jonnie of Columbia; and sister, Evelyn Curtis.
